Mk 46 Mod 2 provides the fielded bridge path. Mk 38 Mod 4 is the preferred next-production study because it combines a 30 mm gun, improved fire control, airburst-ammunition growth, and Aegis integration.
9. SCUTUM Light-Defense Mount
SCUTUM means Standardized Close-in Universal Tactical Utility Mount. The Latin word scutum means shield. The name identifies a distributed protective layer rather than a single weapon.

Classification rule: caliber is a screening guide, not the deciding test. Weight, recoil, ammunition, sensors, power, cooling, control, and combat function determine the required interface. Phalanx remains a Cerberus payload despite using a 20 mm gun because it is a complete autonomous CIWS with integral radar and fire control.
Locked Class Position Counts
The program reserves the maximum practical number of standardized foundations during ship design. An unused position can be closed under a weather-tight armored cap; adding structure, cabling, ammunition access, and safe firing arcs after construction would be substantially harder.

Locked quantity, configurable load: the physical counts are fixed at 6, 10, and 16. The installed adapter mix may change by mission, certification, and threat. Exact deck locations remain subject to detailed firing-arc, blast, recoil, topweight, aviation-clearance, sensor-interference, and topside-congestion validation.

Crew-Served Guns
Certified pedestal or remote adapters support M2 .50-caliber and M240 7.62 mm weapons for small-craft defense, warning fire, restricted-water security, and watchstanding.
MANPADS Station
A removable Navy-certified firing-station package supports shoulder-fired missiles, protected ready-use storage, communications, combat-system cueing, identification controls, and safe firing sectors. The trained team and missiles remain threat-driven mission equipment.
Nonlethal Utility
Adapters may carry a water cannon, acoustic hailer, searchlight, visual-warning device, or compatible combinations for escalation control, port security, and small-craft warning.
Payload rule: no adapter is accepted because it merely fits the bolt pattern. Each configuration requires structural, shock, recoil, electrical, electromagnetic, fire-control, ammunition, maintenance, human-factors, and weapons-safety certification.
Government-Controlled Interface
- Foundation: common deck penetration, bolt pattern, corrosion isolation, drainage, grounding, shock limits, and weather-tight capped condition.
- Services: standardized electrical power, data, communications, combat-system cueing, local control, remote-control pathway, and payload-specific utility connections.
- Safety: software and mechanical firing inhibits, class-specific keep-out zones, ammunition access, protected ready lockers, and aviation or boat-operation interlocks.
- Future insertion: vendors design new light-defense payloads to the government-owned SCUTUM envelope rather than requiring a new hull-specific mounting arrangement.
- Refit: a certified adapter can be replaced during normal maintenance or the standard 60-month refit without changing the permanent foundation.
